Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Lambeth Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Lambeth is committed to providing removal and transport services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with our day to day moving and delivery activities.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment arising from our work. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards, and we will continually seek to improve our performance through regular review of our procedures and practices.

Health and safety is a core management responsibility and an integral part of all planning and operational decisions made within Man and Van Lambeth. Every employee is required to co operate with this policy and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Responsibilities

The management of Man and Van Lambeth has overall responsibility for health and safety within the company, including setting objectives, providing resources and ensuring that safe systems of work are in place. Management will:

Identify and assess risks associated with removal work, driving, loading and unloading.

Provide information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure that work is carried out safely.

Ensure that vehicles, equipment and tools are properly maintained and fit for purpose.

Monitor health and safety performance and take corrective action where required.

Employees and contractors are responsible for following all health and safety procedures, using equipment correctly, reporting hazards or incidents, and cooperating with managers in maintaining a safe working environment.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We undertake risk assessments for typical removal activities, including manual handling, operation of vehicles, working in customers premises, and loading and unloading items. These assessments are used to develop safe working methods that staff must follow.

Before work begins at any address, staff are expected to take a moment to identify potential hazards such as restricted access, uneven surfaces, traffic, poor lighting or adverse weather conditions. Where significant risks are identified on site, the team leader must adjust the work method, seek assistance or, if necessary, stop work until it can be carried out safely.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core element of removal work and presents specific risks of injury if not carried out correctly. Man and Van Lambeth will:

Provide training on safe lifting techniques and team carrying methods.

Use handling aids, such as trolleys, straps and blankets, to reduce strain wherever reasonably practicable.

Require staff to assess the weight, size and shape of items before moving them and to request assistance for heavy or awkward loads.

Prohibit unsafe lifting practices, including twisting while lifting, rushing, or attempting to move items beyond individual capability.

Customers are asked not to place items in positions that require unsafe lifting or access, and our teams are instructed to decline any request that would expose them to unacceptable risk.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

We recognise the risks associated with driving and operating vans within our service area. To minimise these risks, we will:

Ensure that all drivers hold the appropriate licence, are competent and receive any necessary training.

Maintain vehicles in a roadworthy condition, carrying out regular checks and servicing.

Require drivers to obey road traffic laws, observe speed limits and drive in a courteous and defensive manner.

Plan routes to minimise driving time, reduce stress and allow for safe loading and unloading at each location.

Prohibit driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when unfit due to fatigue or illness.

Use of Equipment and Vehicle Loading

All equipment used for removal work, including trolleys, ramps, straps and protective covers, must be inspected regularly and used only for its intended purpose. Staff must not use damaged or defective equipment and must report any faults immediately.

Vehicle loading must be carried out in a way that prevents items from shifting during transit and ensures that doors can be opened safely on arrival. Heavy items should be placed low and secured properly. Staff must take care to avoid overloading vehicles or obstructing driver visibility.

Working in Customers Premises

When working in homes, offices or other premises, staff must respect the property and take steps to protect both people and belongings. This includes:

Using protective coverings where required to reduce risk of slips and damage.

Keeping walkways clear of trip hazards such as tools, boxes and packing materials.

Communicating clearly with customers about the planned route for moving items.

Ensuring that doors, gates and access points are used safely and left secure where necessary.

Incident Reporting and Investigation

All accidents, near misses, damage and hazardous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to management. We treat incident reporting as a positive, proactive measure that helps us learn and prevent recurrence.

Incidents will be investigated to identify root causes and to determine whether changes in training, equipment, procedures or supervision are required. Findings and lessons learned will be communicated to relevant staff.

Training, Information and Supervision

Man and Van Lambeth will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training to ensure that staff understand their responsibilities and are competent to carry out their roles safely. Training may include manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, emergency procedures and customer care.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring working practices on site, correcting unsafe behaviour and supporting staff in applying this policy consistently.

Consultation and Continuous Improvement

We encourage feedback from employees, contractors and customers on health and safety matters. Suggestions for improvement will be considered by management and, where appropriate, incorporated into our procedures.

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, our operations or the nature of the removal and transport services we provide.
